Supplier Spotlight - 12 Bones - Asheville

Radii 100's owner Wendy was first introduced to 12 Bones while working on a senior project for her AppState Sustainable Development degree. The assignment was to design and build the first portion of a pedestrian greenway extension from Asheville's famed River Arts District (RAD) south towards the Biltmore House along the banks of the French Broad River. The original 12 Bones restaurant was within a football field of where the project would be erected. The project group would find themselves eating there quite a bit and they learned the history of the place.

Originally opened in 2005 by Tom Montgomery and Sabra Kelley in an old greasy spoon that had been flooded out, the two created quite the hoppin' BBQ smoking spot. So much so, in October 2008 President Obama came to visit. He returned in May 2010 and even in February 2013 when the Secret Service stopped in and picked up To-Go food to take on Air Force One for him. The school project completed and time moving on, the construction portion of the larger traffic easement began which caused the restaurant to be removed to make room for a traffic circle. This was around 2019 when Angela and Bryan King bought and relocated the restaurant. They found a huge old warehouse, but it was too big for only a restaurant, so they teamed up with Angela's brother who had a successful brewery in Colorado and they combined beer brewing and BBQ in the restored warehouse on Hendersonville Rd.

While Radii does not carry spirits, we do carry all of 12 Bones BBQ sauces and rubs made right in Asheville. The group project ended up as a multi-modal pedestrian bridge which they appropriately named 13 Bones.
